 Barrier-Free and Barrier-Reduced Cruises
Cruise packages for wheelchair users, scooter users and slow walkers who want added features on an accessible cruise.
Many people prefer to travel in a group. For that reason, we occasionally run group "Barrier-Free" and "Barrier-Reduced" cruises.
What's the difference between a Barrier-Reduced and a Barrier-Free cruise?
On a Barrier-FREE cruise, we feel the ship is fully or nearly fully accessible and that extras that other lines don't think of are included. For instance, the ship may even have a lift into a pool and/or jacuzzi for added wheelchair accessibility. Service dogs are welcome and the line offers ASL interpreters for deaf clients. In other words... the cruise line "gets it" when it comes to accessibility and we feel they generally go the extra mile. In many cases, these are also newer ships.
On a Barrier-REDUCED cruise, we feel that the ship is mostly accessible, but are disappointed in a few things which don't seem to be completely thought out. For instance, there may be a ramp to the balcony in your cabin, but the ramp is excessively steep. Or the cabin can only comfortably handle one wheelchair user. Or the cruise line didn't think to make the dance floor accessible. In general, it might be a slightly older ship or it may be a cruise line which doesn't yet think out accessibility fully.
The above are generalizations and not every wheelchair user has the same abilities and needs. Your Disabled Cruise Specialist at Connie George Travel Associates can assist you in determining the cruise (ship, tendering and ports) which is of most interest to YOU. Because that's what it's all about.... YOUR cruise, YOUR vacation!
