Discover the magic of Crete, with its sleepy villages, isolated coves and breathtaking gorges. Then let the boat take the strain!
Through the Samaria Gorge
We arrive in Crete at the old Venetian harbour-town of Khania (where Zorba the Greek was filmed). After traversing dizzying mountain roads, we begin our walk following pleasant hill trails on the Omalos Plateau (1100m), where traditional goat-herds tend their flocks. From here we descend the winding and awesome canyon of Samaria - Europe's longest and most spectacular gorge (6-8 hour hike) - to emerge at the old fishing village of Ayia Roumeli, where we board the ferry to Loutro.
Cretan Village Life
Two days are then spent hiking along this dramatic stretch of coast, sculpted by deep ravines and dotted with old castles, ruined churches and forts. We discover secluded coves and sandy beaches, and perhaps make a sortie along ancient pathways to the Aradhena Gorge. Finally, we base ourselves in the lively Cretan village of Zaros (640m) - a thriving agricultural community in the foothills of the Idi Mountains. Here we visit a friendly working monastery and hike through the spectacular ravines and canyons, before ending at the capital, Iraklion.
Poseidon's Realm
Boarding our caique in Rafina, we make for mountainous Evia and the fishing village of Panagia where we pause to explore and take our first dip on the warm waters of the Aegean. It's possible to walk to the red-roofed village of Almiros Potamos before we depart for Eretria, a region that has its own Poseidon legend… Here we will enjoy the first of several relaxed meals taken in local tavernas, and an opportunity perhaps to trying traditional mezes.
Explore Picturesque Villages
Next morning free time allows for an exploration of the town, once one of the most powerful city states of ancient Greece. The Temple of Apollo, Acropolis and Gymnasium date back to the 4th century and are well worth a visit. Later we cruise to Buffalo Bay, a perenial favourite amongst our travellers being both beautiful and, almost always, deserte
