Pets have a way of becoming the heart of our homes. They’re the tail-wagging welcome committee, the quiet companions during morning coffee, and the ones who somehow make even ordinary days feel brighter. For many of us, dogs and cats aren’t just pets—they’re family.

That’s why, when it’s time to plan a vacation, our furry family members are part of the picture too. With a little planning—and the right travel protection—you can plan your trip with a layer of confidence in your investment.

Most pets do well while we’re away. With a trusted sitter, a favorite kennel, or a caring relative, they settle into their own routine. Meanwhile, you get to recharge, explore new places, and return home with fresh stories and energy. Travel is good for the soul—and coming home to a joyful dog or content cat makes it even sweeter.

Pet Parents: Plan Your Travel With Confidence

One option many pet parents appreciate is the Pet Bundle add-on from Travel Insured International. This upgrade recognizes something important: pets are part of real life, and real life doesn’t pause just because we’re traveling.

A couple of the benefits are designed for travelers who are bringing their pet cat or dog, or service dog on the trip, to support emergency medical or re-entry needs. But the features that resonate most with many of my clients are the ones that help when pets are safely at home while you travel.

Pet Kennel Benefit – up to $50 per day, maximum $500

If a covered travel delay—like weather or airline issues as a couple of examples—keeps you from getting home on time, this benefit can help with the cost of those unexpected extra kennel days. Instead of stressing about mounting boarding fees, you can focus on getting home safely.

Trip Cancellation – up to 100% of your non-refundable trip cost

Over the years, I've had many clients ask me, if their cat or dog got sick, injured or died, would trip insurance refund their out-of-pocket losses. Sadly, our four-legged family members didn't count. Now, with a minimal add-on, you can be covered.

Trip Interruption – up to 150% of your non-refundable trip cost

As with Trip Cancellation coverage, insurance allows for claims of up to 150% of your unused trip services and airline tickets home in case of certain emergencies, including if an immediate family member has emergency medical needs or has passed. With the Pet Bundle addition, pet parents can now have that reassurance which is huge. You know you have options if the unexpected occurs.

For about $16–$18 per person, the Pet Bundle simply adds an extra layer of peace of mind. It removes it. It lets you say “yes” to that cruise, tour, or getaway knowing you’ve planned thoughtfully for everyone you love.

More to know:

  • As with any type of insurance claim, there's paperwork to complete and documentation required.

  • This add-on is not available in all states.

  • The pet-related coverages are available options with a growing number of third-party trip insurance companies.

  • I have not seen cruise lines or tour operators' insurance programs offer this option.

🐾 6 Tips to Help Pets—and Pet Parents—With Separation Anxiety

1) Start With a Calm Atmosphere

Pets read our emotions instantly. If we’re anxious, they become anxious too. Keep departures relaxed and upbeat, more like leaving for errands than for a long vacation. A confident “See you soon!” helps both of you feel better.

2) Create a Familiar Feeling

Routine can be comforting. Ask your sitter or kennel to follow your pet’s normal schedule for meals, walks, and bedtime. When daily life feels the same, pets settle in faster and parents worry less.

3) Leave the Comfort of Your Scent

A favorite blanket, a T-shirt you’ve worn, or a well-loved toy can be incredibly soothing. Your scent reminds your pet that they are safe and still connected to you.

4) Plan Positive Distractions

Extra playtime, puzzle toys, or special treats keep pets engaged and happy. A busy pet has less time to feel lonely.

5) Use Gentle Check-Ins

Ask for a photo or quick update while you’re away. Seeing your pet relaxed at home can instantly lift your spirits.

6) Bring a Little Piece of Them With You

Pack a small framed photo for your nightstand, or a photo and a magnet to display on your ship cabin wall (which are usually metal), so you feel close until you reunite.

Reading Suggestion: "How to Choose a Pet Sitter"

(If you are a CGTA client and would like to share a photo with your cat or dog,

send it to connie@cgta.com. I'd love to add you and your pet.)

After decades of helping travelers, I’ve seen that the best trips happen when people feel truly free to relax. Thoughtful preparation—choosing the right destination, the right accommodations, and yes, the right protection—creates that freedom.

So dream about the places you want to see next. Plan the getaway that’s been on your list. Your dog will still greet you like a hero when you walk in the door, and your cat will pretend they didn’t miss you (even though they did).

Loving a pet and loving travel go hand in hand. With good planning and a little extra protection, you really can enjoy both—with a happy heart and a clear mind.

When booking your vacation, please let us know you have a pet and would like to learn more about adding this important coverage.

Happy Traveling!
