Imagine sipping your morning coffee as the Columbia River winds through dramatic cliffs, watching the scenery change as you travel through the Pacific Northwest, or stepping onto your private balcony to see what the day has in store. Add fascinating American history, comfortable accommodations and plenty of opportunities to explore, and you have the makings of a pretty wonderful vacation!

Meet American Encore, the newest riverboat in American Cruise Lines' (ACL) fleet, which debuted in May 2026. With room for 180 guests and a host of thoughtful features, ACL has given American river cruising a fresh new look.

American Encore is one of the three new additions to American Cruise Lines' fleet this year. Along with this 180-guest riverboat sailing the Columbia and Snake Rivers, ACL introduced two 130-guest coastal ships in 2026: American Maverick and American Ranger. It's an exciting time for travelers looking to explore America's waterways!

A Riverboat With Room to Enjoy Yourself

American Encore has five decks, a contemporary interior and a four-story glass atrium that brings natural light into the heart of the ship. There are multiple lounges and gathering areas, so you can find your own favorite spot for reading, chatting with fellow travelers or watching the scenery roll by.

The River Lounge hosts entertainment and onboard activities, while the Chart Room offers another place to relax. The Sky Lounge and Bow Terrace provide additional spots to enjoy the views, and the Sun Deck has an outdoor walking track called the Sky Walk.

I particularly like the variety of spaces. Some days you'll want to join the fun; other days, you may prefer a quiet corner and a good book. You can do both here.

Staterooms: Room to Spread Out

Let's talk accommodations, because that's your living quarters for the duration of your sailing.

American Encore's Deluxe, Premium and Vista Balcony Staterooms measure about 300 square feet and include comfortable furnishings, a spacious bathroom and a private balcony. Floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors bring in natural light and make it easy to step outside for fresh air and to feel like you're truly part of the incredible scenery. The difference in category is dependent on location.

Want something larger? The Sky Suite offers 350 square feet, while the Grand Suite measures 600 square feet and has separate living and sleeping areas. Both offer generous space and private balconies.

Then there's the Signature Suite. At approximately 1,500 square feet, it features three walls of glass, a wraparound balcony, a separate living room and bedroom, a wet bar, a walk-in closet and a soaking tub beside windows overlooking the river. That's a whole lot of room for a riverboat!

ACL also offers a Vista Balcony category, measuring 300 square feet, as well as single-balcony accommodations measuring 250 square feet.

This's where working with a travel advisor who knows ships really pays off.

At Connie George Travel Associates, we look beyond the pretty pictures. We consider the deck plan, what's above and below each stateroom, proximity to busy public areas and which locations are more desirable. Our goal is to help you choose a cabin that suits your needs and budget..

Dining: Come Hungry!

The glass-enclosed main restaurant serves meals featuring American specialties and locally sourced ingredients. When you're in the mood for something more casual, the Back Porch Café offers another dining option.

There are also snacks and treats to enjoy throughout the day. Ice cream and popcorn add a little extra fun between meals.

ACL describes its cruises as all-inclusive, with dining, beverages and many shore excursions included. Specific inclusions can vary, so we'll review what's covered on your particular sailing before you book.

More Than a Place to Sleep

American Encore also has a fitness center, guest laundry facilities and elevators serving the passenger decks. Those practical touches are worth appreciating, particularly on a longer vacation.

For some quiet time, the Study offers a place to read or tackle a puzzle. The Storyteller Lounge provides another relaxed gathering space, while the Game Room gives guests an alternative when they're in the mood for a little friendly competition.

And don't overlook the Sun Deck. Besides the walking track, it's a wonderful place to enjoy the fresh air and watch the river scenery unfold. Passing through the locks and dams along the route can be fascinating, too. Watching the ship move through these impressive structures gives you a different perspective on the waterways that helped shape the region.

The Columbia and Snake Rivers: Scenery With a Story

American Encore sails the nine-day, eight-night Columbia and Snake Rivers itinerary between Portland, Oregon, and Clarkston, Washington.

This journey combines dramatic landscapes with fascinating American history. You'll explore a region associated with the Lewis and Clark expedition, discover historic communities and have opportunities to learn about the people and events that shaped the Pacific Northwest.

Depending on your departure, ports may include Astoria, The Dalles and Richland. Shore excursions can introduce you to local attractions, regional history and the area's distinctive scenery.

One of the pleasures of this journey is that the river itself becomes part of the experience. The landscape changes as you travel, and there's always something to watch from your balcony or one of the ship's observation areas.

The exact ports, schedules and excursions vary by departure, so we'll review the itinerary to find the experiences that appeal to you most.

Is American Encore Right for You?

I'd recommend considering American Encore if you enjoy beautiful scenery, American history and a relaxed way of exploring. The spacious accommodations, multiple lounges and destination-focused activities make it appealing to couples, solo travelers and anyone who appreciates having choices throughout the day.

It's also a wonderful opportunity to discover a part of the United States you may not have explored before. You can spend your days learning about the region, enjoying the scenery and visiting interesting communities, then return to the ship to relax before the next day's adventures.
