If you're searching for the best things to do in Miami before or after a cruise, you'll find no shortage of exciting options. As the world's busiest cruise port, Miami welcomes millions of cruise passengers every year, yet many travelers never venture beyond their hotel or the cruise terminal. That's a missed opportunity because Miami offers beautiful beaches, fascinating neighborhoods, unique cultural experiences, excellent museums, waterfront dining, and plenty of opportunities to relax before or after your sailing.

As a travel advisor, I strongly recommend arriving in your cruise embarkation city at least one day before your ship departs. Flight delays, weather disruptions, and missed connections can happen, and arriving early helps ensure your vacation begins stress-free.

Even better, consider arriving two or three days before your cruise—or staying a few days afterward. Those extra days allow you to experience some of Miami's top attractions while turning your cruise vacation into a more complete getaway.

Whether you're traveling as a couple, with friends, as a family, or on a multigenerational vacation, these 12 attractions can help you make the most of your time in Miami.

12 Things to Do in Miami Before or After Your Cruise

1. South Beach

No visit to Miami feels complete without spending time at South Beach. Famous for its soft white sand, turquoise water, and lively atmosphere, it's one of the city's most iconic destinations. Visitors can relax on the beach, take a leisurely walk along the shoreline, or simply enjoy the ocean views. It's an ideal way to ease into vacation mode before boarding your cruise ship.

2. Art Deco Historic District

The Art Deco Historic District is one of Miami Beach's most recognizable attractions. The area features hundreds of colorful buildings dating back to the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s. Pastel colors, neon lights, and unique architectural details create a distinctive look unlike anywhere else in the country. It's a wonderful place for a stroll and some memorable vacation photos.

3. Ocean Drive

Located alongside the beach, Ocean Drive is one of Miami's most famous streets. Palm trees, outdoor cafés, and restaurants create a vibrant atmosphere day and night. Whether you're enjoying a meal, sipping a cold drink, or simply people-watching, Ocean Drive offers a classic Miami experience that's easy to enjoy during a short stay.

4. Little Havana

Little Havana offers visitors the chance to experience Miami's rich Cuban heritage. Walk along Calle Ocho, and you'll discover authentic restaurants, bakeries, cigar shops, art galleries, and lively music. Stop for a Cuban coffee, sample traditional cuisine, and soak in the neighborhood's energy. It's one of the best places to experience the cultural diversity that makes Miami so unique.

While in Little Havana, I highly recommend eating at Versailles restaurant, often referred to as the “World’s Most Famous Cuban Restaurant.” I've enjoyed breakfast there twice, and both visits were fantastic. The food was excellent, the atmosphere was lively, and it felt like an authentic Cuban Miami experience. A local friend turned me on to their Cuban Espresso (Cafecito) on my first visit there. If you visit Little Havana, consider enjoying a meal at Versailles before or while exploring the neighborhood.

5. Bayside Marketplace

Conveniently located near the cruise port, Bayside Marketplace combines shopping, dining, entertainment, and waterfront views. Visitors can browse local shops, enjoy a meal overlooking the marina, or simply relax while watching boats come and go. Live music is often featured, creating a fun atmosphere. It's an easy and enjoyable attraction for cruise passengers with limited time.

6. Vizcaya Museum & Gardens

Vizcaya Museum & Gardens is one of Miami's true treasures. This magnificent waterfront estate was built in the early 1900s and was inspired by European villas. Visitors can tour the elegant mansion and explore beautifully landscaped gardens filled with fountains, sculptures, and walking paths. The combination of history, architecture, and scenery makes Vizcaya a favorite among visitors.

7. Enjoy a Sunset Over Biscayne Bay

Sometimes the simplest experiences become the most memorable. Watching the sun set over Biscayne Bay provides stunning views of the water, yachts, and Miami skyline. Numerous waterfront restaurants and lounges offer excellent vantage points for enjoying the scenery. Whether you're celebrating the start of your cruise or reflecting on a wonderful vacation, it's a relaxing Miami tradition.

8. Jungle Island

Jungle Island offers a fun change of pace from beaches and shopping. This family-friendly attraction features exotic animals, interactive exhibits, educational presentations, and beautiful tropical landscaping. Visitors can learn about wildlife from around the world while enjoying hands-on experiences. It's especially popular with families, but travelers of all ages may be surprised by how much you enjoy it.

9. Everglades National Park

Just a short drive from Miami, Everglades National Park showcases one of the most unique ecosystems in North America. Many visitors choose an airboat tour that glides across the famous River of Grass. Along the way, you may spot alligators, turtles, birds, and other wildlife. It's an unforgettable outdoor adventure that offers a completely different perspective on South Florida.

10. Frost Museum of Science

The Frost Museum of Science is a great attraction for travelers who enjoy learning while you explore. The museum features interactive exhibits, a world-class planetarium, and a fascinating aquarium. Visitors can learn about marine life, weather, technology, and space exploration through hands-on experiences. It's a wonderful choice for families as well as curious adults.

11. Pérez Art Museum Miami

Pérez Art Museum Miami is home to an impressive collection of contemporary and modern art from around the world. Beyond the exhibits, visitors are often drawn to the museum's striking architecture and beautiful waterfront location. Large outdoor terraces provide excellent views of Biscayne Bay, making this an enjoyable stop even for travelers who don't normally consider themselves art enthusiasts.

12. Lincoln Road

Lincoln Road is one of Miami Beach's most popular pedestrian districts. Lined with shops, restaurants, cafés, galleries, and outdoor seating, it's a great place to spend a leisurely afternoon or evening. Whether you're shopping for souvenirs, enjoying a meal, or simply relaxing with a coffee, Lincoln Road offers a lively atmosphere that's distinctly Miami.

Final Thoughts

A cruise vacation doesn't have to begin when you step aboard your ship. By arriving in Miami a day or two early—or even better, two or three days before embarkation—you can reduce travel stress while enjoying one of America's most exciting cities.

Whether you're interested in beaches, culture, shopping, history, wildlife, museums, or simply relaxing by the water, Miami offers something for every traveler. A little extra time before or after your cruise can transform your embarkation city into a memorable destination in its own right.

Happy Traveling!
