One of My Secrets to Packing Less (It’s Simpler Than You Think)

Many people do it—they pack for a trip like they need an outfit for every possible situation… and then some. Before they know it, the suitcase is overstuffed, heavy, and hard to manage. The truth is, you don’t need nearly as much as you think.
One of the easiest ways to pack lighter and still feel comfortable during your trip is simply knowing you can do a little laundry along the way. But let's take that a step further.
I’m going to be honest—I don’t get excited about doing laundry. Not at home, and not when I’m traveling.
It’s still laundry.
But… I do appreciate what it does for me when I travel.
Being able to wash a few things here and there can make a big difference. And I’m not hauling liquid detergent or pods with me. There’s an easier way.
Here’s What I’ve Learned
Most people pack too much. I see it all the time.
They want options, they want “just in case,” and before they know it, they’ve got a suitcase that’s too heavy and too full.
The reality is—you can pack less if you know you have the option to do a small load or wash a few things along the way.
That alone takes a lot of pressure off.

You Don’t Need Anything Fancy
Here are a few cruise lines that offer self-service laundry on all or some of their ships:
Cunard
Disney Cruise Line
Oceania
Princess Cruises
Silversea
Viking Ocean Cruises
Some extended-stay hotels also offer self-service laundry facilities.
But you don't need machines to do simple laundry. I’ve done it many times right in the bathroom sink. Undergarments, a top, something you just want to freshen up—it doesn’t take much. Hang it up overnight, and you’re good to go.
Laundry Tip:
Over the years, when I've talked to clients about using a launderette on a cruise ship, I’ve shared: “Forget everything your mama taught you about separating your clothes—just get a load done.”

What I Bring With Me
I use Clean People Laundry Sheets at home, and that’s what made it so easy to start bringing them with me when I travel. They’re simple, work really well, and take up almost no space.
They’re not the only company that makes laundry sheets—just the only brand I’ve used.
And they are great for travel. A couple of sheets in a Ziplock bag take up almost no space, and there's nothing to leak in your luggage, which is always a win. I also like that there’s no measuring or mess. Just tear a sheet, and you’re done.
While I haven’t tried other brands, I can say this style of detergent works really well for travel. Whether I’m using a washer or just the sink, they get the job done without any hassle.

I also like to pack a travel-size bottle of Fabreze or other fabric freshener. For clothing that doesn't need to be washed but I'd like it freshened up a bit, I hang it on a hanger and give a quick spray on the front and back. Let it hang for a bit, and that top or jeans is ready for another day. Remember to always pack any spray bottle inside a ziplock bag.

The Bottom Line
I’m not going to tell you laundry is fun.
But I will say this—having the option to do it when you need to makes traveling a lot easier.
You can pack lighter, stay comfortable, and not feel like you have to bring your entire closet with you.
And for me, that’s worth it.
Happy Traveling!
